Walk Together/Come Together
The first time I heard the Uluru Statement From the Heart (https://ulurustatement.org/the-statement/) I was very moved by it. Not long afterwards (in 2022), I was asked to write a piece of music for the Massed Choir Festival, which is a festival for the public primary schools of Western Australia. I chose the Statement as the theme of the songs and I wrote the lyrics with these young people in mind:
It started at the centre It’s sweeping cross this land The heartbeat of a nation We seek to understand Do you hear the message? Will you play a part? There’s been an invitation A statement from the heart Walk together - the journey’s bout to start Come together - it’s a statement from the heart We can change our story by acknowledging our past Looking to our future with open hearts and hands We’re starting a new chapter It’s better than the last A whole new generation Change is coming fast! Walk together - the journey’s bout to start Come together - it’s a statement from the heart Learning, listening, understanding. All together side by side New beginnings, future dreamings Stand together side by side Can you feel the winds sweeping cross our land? Winds that change our way of understanding Working side by side to heal our land One by one our story we can change
Jesus Christ Was Born Today
I am not a religious person but I work as a Music Director in churches every Sunday and have done for quite a few years. I wrote this Christmas carol about the birth of Jesus and also his ongoing legacy as I have seen played out in my time working for the Christian community.
Little baby in the manger Crying softly with the light First breath of God's new creation taken on that holy night Precious baby sleeping soundly softly in a bed of hay As we listen we remember Jesus Christ was born today May the songs be never ending Songs that praise this baby boy Born to wisdom and compassion Deep inside we feel his joy Born into a lowly stable we will sing his name today As we sing we will remember Jesus Christ was born today Like the stable, Jesus too was humble from his very birth Who would know his inspiration to the humble of the earth? Who would know this new born child would sacrifice his life one day? When we sing we will remember Jesus Christ was born today
