From the recording The Line

Several years ago I was living in smalltown Eastern Ontario. I was doing a gig in a local bar….in mid winter. There was a blizzard outside and the bar was virtually empty - who wants to go see live music in the middle of a blizzard? However there was a woman there watching me play. She stayed the whole night, listened to all my songs, and then kindly offered to help me pack up and cart gear to my car (I rarely turn down offers like this!)

By the end of the night, she (unexpectedly) indicated to me that she was keen to continue the evening….. at her abode. I had to tell her that I was very flattered but that was not going to happen, due to my marital status. It was true, I WAS very flattered, as things like that did not happen to me very often and she was also a beautiful and kind person. I wrote this song about that night.

The term “the one that got away” sounds sexist I know, or at the very least flippant, so I apologize about that. But truth be told, I was actually thinking of this song being a kind of an encouragement for her - to keep looking for love, because she was someone who deserved love and had a lot to offer, even though it would not be from me. I hope that makes sense. That sentiment doesn’t really come across in the title as such, which probably makes it an imperfect song I guess, but who has ever written a perfect song?

By the way, I was proud to collaborate with an old music friend, Patricio Garcia, on this track. He played all the percussion instruments on this song. A proud Chilean man, we played a lot together in the 90s when I was playing in Perth with Chilean band “Los Chasquis”. He really made our songs soar back then when he played them and that’s why I wanted him to play on this one, all these years later. He’s still got it as you will hear. Thanks Patto!

Ok imagine you are standing in a blizzard in Canada, the gig is over, the snow is flying………press "play" now and follow the story!

Lyrics

And just on thing before I go There’s just one thing I want you to know In another time and another place Things might have gone a different way and It’s crazy I know And word’s don’t come that easy It’s’ such a cliche But it seems to me, you’ll have to be The one that got away

It happens everyday All around the world they say But it still took me by surprise. I really hate to say But I can’t play this game with you Cos you’re the one that got away

The search for love can seem so long It sounds so easy in a song But true love is worth waiting for And it’s gonna walk right through your door and It’s hard to explain But you know it when you find it It’s worth all the pain But till that day, you’ll have to stay The one that got away

It happens everyday All around the world they say But it still took me by surprise. I really hate to say But I can’t play this game with you Cos you’re the one that got away

Believe me I’ve been there before And I know what loneliness can mean And it’s so easy just to run and hide And I’m not trying to be unkind You deserve what I can’t offer you So hold on tight
Cos it happens everyday All around the world they say But it still took me by surprise. I really hate to say But I can’t play this game with you Cos you’re the one that got away The one that got away
